Founded in the 1980s, SAFE was originally a student-led movement campaigning for an end to apartheid in South Africa. While state-sanctioned segregation has collapsed, limited access to education still means that millions of children across Africa are denied the opportunity to raise themselves out of poverty. By funding educational charities, we give them the tools to change their lives for the better.

What does SAFE do?

Many colleges currently have a SAFE committee that raises money directly from college students, staff and fellows. Some colleges run an opt-in or opt-out scheme, where money is taken directly from the termly bill, while others run fundraising concerts, raffles, and other events. All members of that college are then invited to a meeting to decide where to give that money. Grants are given entirely at the discretion of the college, but will be typically be in the range of £100-1000, and go to small charities running innovative and successful educational projects in Sub-Saharan Africa.

What does CUSAFE do?

CUSAFE is an umbrella organisation, co-ordinating the individual college SAFE schemes. It organises events to raise awareness of issues concerning Sub-Saharan Africa, and works to sustain, improve and expand SAFE in Cambridge. It provides opportunities for SAFE reps to get together, share ideas and meet like-minded people.
