CUSAFE are currently looking for enthusiastic leaders with a passion for education equality to start their own college SAFE scheme.

Starting your own SAFE scheme is a great way to demonstrate leadership skills whilst helping to fund important humanitarian projects; SAFE schemes collectively raise tens of thousands of pounds every year.

By leading your own SAFE scheme, you would be responsible for recruiting your own team, fundraising throughout the year and choosing charities to donate these funds to. SAFE leaders can choose to do as little or as much as they wish. Please click on the questions below to find out more about what SAFE reps do and how to start your own SAFE scheme.

If you would like to start your own SAFE scheme, or would just like to find out more, please CONTACT US.  All members of Cambridge University are welcome to apply.

What is a college SAFE scheme?

A SAFE scheme is an independent team that fundraises within its own college to raise money for education projects in Sub-Saharan Africa. CUSAFE acts as a source of guidance and support to these schemes, helping them with matters ranging from recruitment to fundraising, and are responsible for linking SAFE schemes with charities and projects to give their funds.

What does a SAFE rep do?

SAFE reps are responsible for the running of their SAFE team. The main purpose of SAFE schemes is to fundraise; most SAFE reps choose to do this through a college bill ‘opt-out’ system, with some choosing to hold events and fundraisers such as charity formals in addition to this. In order to ensure successful fundraising, SAFE reps must recruit members to their team and liaise closely with their college to deal with matters such as adding a ‘opt-out’ donation to their college bill. They then get to choose education projects to fund with the money raised. Reps are provided with a comprehensive guide to help them with these tasks, and are encouraged to come to the CUSAFE meetings held every other week.

How do I start a SAFE scheme?

  1. Express your interest by CONTACTING US to receive guidance and advice on how to set up your own SAFE scheme. Please do this before any of the steps below.

  2. Set up your SAFE scheme as an official college society. You may need to contact your societies JCR rep for more information. Every college has a different process, with a few requiring you to have a Fellow’s support. CUSAFE can help you contact your JCR and follow their procedure.

  3. Publicise your SAFE scheme within college and recruit members. Do this by putting up posters, posting in your email bulletin and spreading the word to your friends. Get people to sign up and hold your first meeting (with some refreshments as an incentive for people to turn up)!

  4. You now have a SAFE scheme! Start fundraising by holding an event. This doesn’t have to be anything massive – put on a cake sale, host a quiz night in the bar or run a charity formal. Also, you can contact your JCR and finance department about putting a £5 ‘opt-out’ donation on the college bill too – a great way to raise money! This is not always an easy process so CUSAFE are able to provide assistance where necessary.
